2 humorous hosts (thank you Nico and Leela!)

1 inspiring book (Sal and Gabi Break the Universe)

3 competitive classes

2 fun-loving judges (thanks for making time, Ms. Mendonsa!)

13 brave participants (that means you, magicians!)

Many supportive classmates (thank you all!)

Mind-blowing trick

Good performance

Difficult to spot how it was done

I am so honored and happy to be the judge of the surfboard challenge! First off,  I believe that everyone is a winner for participating in a creative challenge that requires effort,  artistry, innovation and imagination. So congratulations to all of you who participated in the surfboard challenge. 

It’s a really difficult decision to choose one winner because they were all so creative in their own right. I noticed lots of interesting patterns and designs and even some sparkle! I’m going to choose JOSIE  to be the winner for both her incredible shark and surfer illustration and for floatability. It was obvious that she put a lot of thought into the theme of her design. Every surfer has a story and I love how she incorporated Hamilton’s story into her surfboard design. Very inspiring Josie!!

Congratulations to Josie and to all of you! I’m proud that each and every one of you chose to participate in this creative challenge.

Battle of the Books 2018!

As always, our annual BOTB was closely contested--but unlike almost any year I can remember, there were no ties! Congratulations to all participants for great sportsmanship, tons of correct answers, and a lot of fun.

A special shout out to Cady, Jordan, and Shae who each wrote about a bajillion questions, to Jessica C-B for creating SES's first mixed team (staff and students), to Ms. Culbreth and Ms. Mendonsa for helping, and to Ms. Scott and Ms. McDonald for cheering us on and taking pictures.

Finally, the medals and ribbons should be in at Ames Trophy in time for next Friday's assembly. See you there!

Basketball Shooting Contest

Several characters in Secret Coders love to play basketball (and so does the book's author by the way), so Anna and Emilia launched Team MCBA's 2018 activities by running a basketball shooting contest today. Congratulations to those participants who made it to the final round and to our winner.

Independent Projects

Readers are welcome to make independent projects anytime! Independent projects can be drawn, built, baked, sewn, painted, quilted, or created online. We've had scrapbooks, games, posters, cookies, settings created using Lego or Minecraft, and much more. Here are two to get us started:

"Sketchbook of Impossible Things" Drawing Contest

This contest was inspired by the sketchbook that Ally keeps in the book Fish in a Tree. The contest was designed and run by Luc, and will be judged by SES art teacher, Sarah. Here are some of the drawing entries. Which do you think is the best drawing? Which image seems the most impossible?

Wall Jumping Contest

This contest was inspired by the brave souls who attempted to climb over or tunnel under the Berlin Wall, as described in the book, A Night Divided. Here are two action shots of our winners. Can you tell who they are?
